One thing I find fascinating about these early shows is not the weird psychos... or the gimmicky people who are just stupid...
but those people who seem normal and honestly think that they can sing-- the Mariah Carey girl was a case-in-point. (Another is that couple who who both thought they "had what it takes"... and both stunk).

AND... what the heck was with that mime???

(deleted the first post because of my typo...)

hehehe! yes, the mariah carey chic was sorta sad. actually, i was thinking exactly what randy said--if she hadnt been embellishing and trying to be "unique" i think her voice would have been fine. she COULD carry a tune! im not sure she'd have made it to hollywood, but at least they wouldnt have made fun of her!

what really gets me is when the people who are REALLY bad (that couple friendinme mentioned, for one) just keep singing...and singing...and going...even after they're told to STOP! it embarrasses me! LOL. at first i feel badly for them, because they are so deluded (shame on their families!)...but then they start to annoy and embarrass me for being so desperate.

im sure there's a lot of staging involved in the judges' comments, etc...(Fox wants to make good money, right?) but sometimes i just feel so horrible when they are cracking up. after seeing SO many crazies get up there and sing (some real, some fakers)...you've gotta wonder what the judges have in those coke cups...HAHA!!

you both are right! i too just cringe in embarrassment for some of the people who just have no sense of self-respect. you really do wonder why their families would encourage them to degrade themselves to that level. but, you never know. 50% of all families are weirder than your own. and that's saying a lot.

I also feel bad for those kids who've been lied to by their parents all their lives. I've talked about this before, with regards to martial arts training. It's a societal problem we have these days where it's more important to teach kids that they're all winners, setting them up for a cold dose of reality when they "grow up."

I'm not advocating dumping on kids and telling them they stink. I'm saying that we should focus on teaching kids that they don't have to be Mariah Carey to enjoy singing, or Tom Brady to enjoy playing football. There's joy in doing things for their own sake.
