Are We That Callous?

I need to take serious issue with this new FOX show "The Moment of Truth". This show, to me, is worse than the most violent, sexual movie ever made (not that I know what that would be since I don't fill my head with that crap).

Have you watched this show? I haven't really seen more than highlights and a few videos on YouTube but honestly, that's all I've needed to come to my opinions.

If you know nothing about this show, here's the sum up: a contestant is asked a series of increasingly personal questions in efforts to win up to $500,000. The kicker is they're wearing a lie detector so if they answer incorrectly, they lose their chance at the $. If they continue to answer the truth, they win more.

There are two big problems with this. The first is what some people will do for a chunk of change. I mean there is one lady who completely 'fessed up to cheating on her husband and wanting to leave him for her ex-boyfriend...and then lost all of the $ when asked if she thought she was a good person (ha! she answered yes!). All of this hurting her husband (who btw, was sitting right there) for nothing!

The other problem [and this is with society in general] is that FOX has decided that the majority of the American public will find this entertaining. I think the show is pretty popular so I guess they're right.

And that makes me really sad. What kind of people are we that enjoy watching people hurt other people, on purpose for money? Is hurting other people entertainment?

I know my voice is conservative and of the unpopular opinion but if we don't speak out, no one will. There, FOX, take your show and stick it.

I'm right there with you. I have watched a couple of episodes for about three questions each and then got so furious at the idiocy of these people that I changed the channel.

Sad.

Agree with you. I had not even heard of this show but just your description of it worries me too. Have you seen a movie called Idiocracy Amy? Go rent it. It is all about how society sinks lower and lower and how life in general degenerates to such a degree that we live in a world of idiots. This show seems like something that might thrive in Idiocracies' fictional world. Not so fictional though...

I'm totally with you! We see the ads during American Idol and we fast forward them, even the promotions make me and the hubby sick. Its the only time we actually watch FOX.

Sadly, I think it is a reflection of our society. Its why we look are car accidents and listen in on other peoples conversations with the topic turns to problems or scandal.

One of our local channels must have been fairly desperate too. It's now on in prime time here in Australia. Never intend to watch it though. We already believe there's too much trash television coming our way from America. Unfortunately this just proves it.

Shame too, because there's a lot of good stuff that comes from that way too.

SO True. I have never watched it either but I think the idea of it is terrible.

I have watched it a few time I think the people go on there, wanted to end a relationship. Also there is NO way that family goes on thinking they are not going to hear some awful stuff. I also wonder if they are rigging those final answers to be wrong. I am not saying I think it is a moral or good show but out of curiosity I have watched. I do cring with every question.

I wrote a post when the show first premiered stating my concern about the welfare of the families involved. A couple of thoughts... if you have only seen the previews, what you have seen is probably not realistic. They're really good at sensationalizing what's going on in the promos, but it doesn't reflect what actually happened. The answers they've put together with the questions aren't always the ones that go together. A couple of weeks ago, they kept showing (and are STILL showing) a clip of a woman having "a nervous breakdown." In the show, however, she was LAUGHING about a question they'd just asked. No breakdown involved.

Also, the questions are asked of them the day before, so they know going into it EXACTLY which questions they might be asked. They aren't actually wearing a lie detector during the filming of the episode-- they take the lie detector test the day before, and their answers on the show are compared to their answers from the lie detector test to determine whether it was true or false. Honestly, I don't know how someone could have heard all those questions and still gone through with it. If it were me, I'd have had to say I'm sorry, I can't do this!

Totally agree with you. I've heard nothing but negative in regards to this show (I've never watched it!)

it's true, how low can they go? probably lower but still. this is garbage.

thanks for sharing your honest opinion :D

oh man dont EVEN get me started. it enrages and deeply saddens me. it's just one more pathetic example of people making money from other people's willingness to give up their integrity...to make a free buck! i can hear the contestants' inner thoughts now...o O (yes! i can get rid of my husband, get back my ex, AND win the cash! perfect...)

geez, what's it all about?? hmmm...>:| i still continue to question how people can lack so much compassion and just basic human kindness (networks AND contestants). is it greed? or lack of intelligence?? i dont know. unfortunately the audience is willing (working in that idiocy that gypsy mentioned) so the crafty network folks take advantage of it...

all proving how our society continues to degrade and i choose NOT to fill my mind and heart with that sort of CRAP! (well said, amy!)

Everything about this show is despicable. I enjoy shows where people make fools of themselves as much as anyone. This show crosses over into cruelty, not just to the idiots in the hot seat, but to their families, and that just isn't entertaining to me.

I have only seen the commercials for this show but that was enough for me. I can't believe TV has gotten to this. My husband and I make comments about how crappy this show is every time we see the commercial for it. I totally agree with you and I hate that my children have to see those commercials too.

I've seen bits and pieces of it when it's on and continue to be appalled by the questions and extent to which people would go for money. Or fame. Whatever. It's tasteless. It's like self-mutilation.

I saw the preview clips but have never seen the program. I can't see filling my mind with that crap... there are better things to waste my time on.

I was bugged by the previews. Whether they portray the program accurately or not, the program is designed to titillate the audience at the expense of the participants. Nothing good can come from it.

It is a shame that FOX has stooped to that level... oh wait, that's right, FOX didn't have to stoop. That is pretty much where their programming comes from.

(IMHO, other than American Idol, their entire line up is pretty much worthless, degrading and insulting... especially their line up of adult cartoons.)

No its not entertainment. It's discusting crap! Your right lots of people do watch it and most of the shows consist of the kind of questions you described from the one show. I watched about 15 minutes of it one night and the man in the hot seat was proud to announce he had made love to more than 100 woman and kept souvenir underwear from some, all the while his girlfriend, mom, dad, and buddy were sitting in front of him. The girlfriend and mom were pretty disgusted.

i appreciate all of the comments on this show! i knew i couldn't be alone in thinking this was a trash-show! i wish we as a society could be more vocal when we disapprove of things on TV. i'm sure we all don't want our children watching programs such as this! i know i have a pretty fair cross-section of population reading and commenting so i know that a good percentage of people probably feel like we do! i wish we could speak up more than just writing a simple blog post.

oh I completely agree! it is a horrible awful show. why would anyone EVER go on it?

I've seen the show a couple times. What bothers me is that it comes on right before American Idol, a family friendly show. There's no way that I let my son watch this show, it has too many adult issues he doesn't have to know about.
